Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Amanda C — 14 Apr 2011
I don't know what I was expecting from this film, but this wasn't it. Anderson has a wonderfully unHollywood style. It's lyrical and meditative, he makes fantastic use of the long take, camera movement and the coloration of the film and his framing while conventional with the use of figures in doors, somehow comes off as fresh and new.
Adam Sandler is playing his usual role, but with more edge and to a purpose. He's not playing for cheap laughs here, and he's not some stereotypical man-child. The entire film is beautifully conceived, edgy, light, humorous and uterly fascinating.
