Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by John A — 29 Jun 2011
A touching and oddly comic piece from Anderson. Simple in conception and story, the execution is what's really on display, particularly with the way Anderson plays with light, shadow, color, sound, and framing.
The latter two serve to create a cramped and confined feeling through the bulk of the film, which on a formal level echoes what Sandler's character is dealing with in the story. Watson imbues her character with a quiet tenderness--a refreshing alternative in Barry's troubled world.
