Review of Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes (2006) by Ben Y — 17 Jun 2007
I'll say this, Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes is a more acceptable sequel to the original. Unfortunately that doesn't really say anything. I enjoyed the CG upgrade and liked the fact that Pumpkinhead's main attack is still the forearm smack. What upset me was, although he did light a priest on fire, other then that he didn't have the Sadistic sense of humor when killing.
Anywho, any scene with Pumkinhead was awesome. Unfortunately the story was blah, very bad blah. The town Dr./Mortician decided that instead of cremating the recently deceased like he's supposed to he decided to take their organs and sell them to the black market (so he can treat the town for free) and then dump the bodies in the swamp... well, I guess thats good enough reason for some townsfolk to want revenge but that just makes the Doc seem retarded. Why doesn't he just cremate the bodies AFTER he took their organs?
Not only that but the movie starts with a hiker who see's one of the docs henchmen dumping a body in the swamp, go to Mortuary and run into a room where the doc is cutting up a dead body. The hiker runs away and the doc sends out more goons to go kill him because he "saw too much." Because you know, that's suspicious: The mortician cutting up on a dead guy...
Another thing is that they tried giving back-stories to the main characters but never really went into it. You follow this blond chick a majority of the time thinking, "hey! that's the main character. She's gonna be the one to put the demon to rest." But then she goes kaput and some other girl who is supposedly the mistress of the blond girls boyfriend/husband is the main character. She shows for a few scenes and has like 5 or six lines total.
What was cool was that they had the ghost of Ed Harley and is was still Lance Henriksen playing the part. It was cool but absolutley unnecessary. He said a line or two that made you think he might be trying to help out one of the characters but all he really was doing was pretty much being a pissed off ghost blaming someone else for his death other then himself. He had no significance in this movie other then his body was the new vessel for the Pumkinhead.
The people who made this movie did an okay job but didn't really do Pumpkinhead any justice. They're just lucky I loved every scene my favorite demon was in.
