Review of Pumpkinhead (1988) by Jason G — 24 Feb 2009
I've always been a big fan of Lance Henrikson and movies like this make me wonder why he never made a bigger name for himself. Henrikson does a great job in this film which itself is a fantastically moody, extremely atmospheric piece.
It's an American Gothic horror film in the tru sense. The effects (specifically the Pumpkinhead creature) are even more realistic than your typical "low-budget" 80's movie will generally allow. Close-ups of the creature show incredible attention to detail.
Stan Winston is not primarily a director and it shows here at times... but these rare, lapses in directorial sense are almost always covered up by better than average cinematography and effective lighting.
Not incredibly frightening or gory however... (in fact, it's almost too subdued to be considered a "horror" film)... but PUMPKINHEAD is still very much worth a watch.
