Review of Pumpkinhead (1988) by Bethany F — 12 Apr 2009
Pumpkinhead is a Grimm's Fairytale come to life.
It so reminds me of old stories and real legends you hear about, and this film makes it seem real with its intense character driven story.
Ed Harley is played sensationally by Lance Henriksen, who really poured himself into this role.
And Pumpkinhead (the creature) was sensational, the special effects and makeup for this film were off the wall it is quite surprising that this film did not do so much better.
I thought the set designs were phenomenal and the music was also very well placed in the film.
Some of the acting from the troubled teens who caused Pumpkinhead's wrath were a bit hokey but were believable enough as they were not required to be more than 2 dimensional characters.
But they still pulled off the scares and the suspense was very well crafted as was the lighting since most of the film after Pumpkinhead is unleashed is very masked in shadows and very bold blue colors.
I do so enjoy this film and it is quite sad that the sequels to this film did not do the original much justice... except perhaps the 3rd film, it had a few good moments.
