I just saw this on IFC last night. And though most of the stuff they play nowadays is unremarkable and very above-ground, there are still films like this in rotation that keep me interested.

Anyway, this film gets A for effort. What's frustrating about this film is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a satire or a black comedy? Is it a fable? Is it a morality tale? It's all of these, the problem being that you can't dump all of these genres on the same film, and if you do, you had better do it correctly. For the most part it doesn't work. Still, it's honest enough, but still tasteless enough for a satire. It warmed my cold steel heart, but also made me cringe. It strives to be as strange as you can handle. It succeeds, but is also feel-good PG-13 watchable. If the writers and directors would just step away from the John Waters box set for a few, I'll bet their future projects will be honed to near perfection.
