Review of Pumpkin (2002) by ***Rachel*** — 20 Oct 2008
Didn't quite reach what I think it aspired to be. If you didn't know it was a comedy from the start, it would take you a while to realize how much of the film was tongue in cheek. It reminded me a little bit of Heathers (only Heathers was infinitely better) in its similar subtle satire.
Christina Ricci's acting was excellent, buit the same can't be said for most of the rest of the cast. Pumpkin himself was probably the weakest part of the film. He wasn't very convincing as a disabled person and that was distracting throughout the movie.
Although to try to inject satire into the characterization of someone who is developmentally disabled is probably an undertaking doomed from the start, so it may not be entirely the actor's fault.
The soundtrack was unfortunately better than the movie deserved (but that's more a credit to the music than anything else).
