Review of Pumping Iron (1977) by Simon W — 30 Jul 2009
Fantastically enteraining documentary. It has a great through line with Arnold as the defending champion and Lou Ferrigno as the rookie condender. If this was a movie then Arnold would be the bad guy in this story - or maybe even the evil genius.
Lou Ferrigno is just such a nice guy schlub who doesn't have an evil bone in his over-sized body and simply doesn't stand a chance against Arnie's tactics. He manipulates his comjpetition with such subtle skill that you just have to laugh.
He never pushes it far enough to be called on - just breaks down their confidence and makes them doubt themselves. Painfull. Still, when you look as amazing as Arnie does in this it hardly seems necessary.
That guy was in a league of his own.
