Review of Pumping Iron (1977) by Gabriel K — 02 Jan 2011
Got this DVD as a gift and it was sitting on a shelf for some time after I finally got around to watch it. It turned out a lot more entertaining than I expected! The film focuses more on behind the scenes rather than the actual competition, and the filmmakers goosed up the story quite a bit to make it an interesting watch, not just for fitness junkies but for regular folks.
The extras are excellent and in some ways are even more interesting than the documentary itself, as it's revealed that much of the drama portrayed in the movie was "just for the camera".
So I guess this makes it more of a "mokumentary" rather than a legitimate documentary, but an interesting watch nonetheless, especially if you're a fan of Arnold (technically speaking, this is his first movie).
