Review of Pumping Iron (1977) by Paul D — 12 May 2012
What a fascinating look at what is truly an odd pastime. The latent homosexuality and the obvious signs of steroid abuse aside, this is really a documentary about who Arnold Schwarzenneger was before he was ARNIE! The insights into the other bodybuilders aren't nearly as compelling, however the interplay between Ferrigno and Schwarzenneger serve to be the most interesting.
The reigning champ vs the naive underdog. But regardless of him coming of a jerk most of the time, there is plenty of nods to the charisma that no doubt helped to lay the tracks to his foray into Hollywood.
The music throughout is reminiscent of 70s porn which only helps to highlight the aforementioned latent homosexuality. Overall, a compelling watch.
