Review of Psycho (1960) by Edgar C — 08 Aug 2012
Every single relevant horror film made in the last 50 years owes its success to Psycho. Stirring (and often unnerving) music, silently suspenseful scenes, and creepy banter between the characters drive the film to its eerie conclusion that, despite the fact that everyone now knows what happens, remains one of the most shocking twist endings in film history.
The film is brim full of iconic moments, from the shower scene to pretty much every sequence featuring Norman Bates (played by perfectly cast Anthony Perkins). Immediately, there's something odd about this guy, but he comes off so nice and humble that you have to wonder what could possibly be wrong with this guy (other than his attachment issues).
The film contrasts between subtlety and shock so perfectly, it should be considered nothing less than a work of art. Of all the classics Alfred Hitchcock brought us in his long, colorful career, this is the best.
