Review of P.S. I Love You (2007) by Frances Ann A — 06 Mar 2012
This is essentially just a chick flick, or a "weepy". I can't imagine any man enjoying this film. Butler's extreme charm is wasted on a character who dies after 20 minutes of the film. Obviously, the ladies will all love to see more of Butler, but they will be thwarted in this. Swank surprised me by her ability to act, as I may be one of the only Americans left who know virtually nothing about her. Furthermore, I thought she was supposed to be beautiful, and although she 's not unattractive, I would never have called her a beauty. So I will move her out of my mental category of "nitwit pretty models" and into the category of "not half-bad actresses".
Butler is some seriously major eye candy, as anyone can tell if you have seen Dear Frankie, a far better film that this.
The part of this movie which affected me the most was Kathy Bates' character, which is warm, well-developed, and touchingly acted.
Overall, despite a few charms, I found this movie a stereotypical Hollywood manipulative chick-flick, and wouldn't bother seeing it again. Any supposed wisdom dispensed is of the most superficial variety.
