You will get baffled if you try to approach the movie based on logic. Indeed it's weird that the dead husband knew what his wife was going to do long time after he passed away. What you need to do is to carelessly watch how Swank manages to get on with her life and how Butler's messages help her in this process in a pretty romantic way.
