This looked as if it was going to be another chick flick, rom-com or generic if not quirky film, but I was happily mistaken. I knew that it was going be a cut above a lot of the usual girly fodder as this was an adaption of the novel of the same name but I was pleasantly surprised by how much this was driven by a clear narrative and didn't fall pray of the usual trapping of the genre.

The dialogue was enjoyable and it was clearly in touch with real couples and relationship interplay, granted, it was sanitises and at times layered on thick but still, it was far from fantastical and struck a cord. Its themes of loss and grief were also well handled, acknowledging that death is not the only way to lose those that you love and that selfishness within grief can be just as an integral a part as being selfless was also well taken.

This was a thoughtful story, well performed, written and directed and throws a bit of a curve ball to the rom-com genre.
