Review of Prozac Nation (2003) by Chad P — 27 Aug 2007
The authenticity of this movie is its strong point. In fact it discredited the characters in other similar (though maybe better) movies like Ryder's character in "Girl, Interupted", because there are far too many supposedly depressed "tragic Figures" in modern movies that just aren't genuine.
But when a character is written by someone who experienced the scenario first hand and then acted as well as Ricci did, it makes for a genuine and poignant film. This film captured the throes of depression more accurately than any movie I've seen, showing how it effects those around her as much as her.
Ricci really through herslef in this role and never came out once during the movie. Plus she was a writer for rolling stone, and there is a cool side story there that captures the obsessvie nature of a great writer.
