Review of Prozac Nation (2003) by Jes B — 28 Aug 2007
This movie is filled with great actors and acting. Christina Ricci always pulls off really believable performances. Jessica Lange well she's just great. Even Jason Biggs is good in this. Anne Heche was not that great but she's pretty minor in the movie as a whole.
It's about a girl who gets depression very badly. Although I'd say it seems more like bi-polar disorder if you ask me. She goes to Harvard to become a writer but ends up so depressed she can't even write. Of course I don't think doing drugs and excessive drinking helped her problem, but it's easy to abuse drugs and alcohol when you're suffering depression to the extent she was.
This movie was based on a true story and a book that was written by the same name as the film. I was able to relate a lot to the girl in the movie. I have suffered depression over the past few years to the point that life becomes unbearable and you just want to hide in bed and not wake up again. I also love how in the movie she referred to pharmacies as crack houses. It's so fucking true. I love how she also says everyone seems to be on these drugs now making the US a Prozac nation. It does seem like more and more people are on anti-depressants. I do believe that they are necessary a lot of the time, but they should NOT be given out by your doctor. A doctor should always refer you to a psychiatrist before pills are prescribed. But that's just my opinion and nothing to do with the movie.
I'd definitely recommend seeing this movie. It's really great and you might have more understanding of depression, and it's effects on those around the person inflicted with it.
