Review of Prophet's Prey (2015) by Anthony B — 23 Sep 2015
Megalomania, defined by Merriam-Webster as "a delusional mental disorder marked by feelings of personal omnipotence and grandeur," is in the news a lot these days. Whether it's a laughably unqualified presidential candidate, a shirtless dictator or, in the documentary "Prophet's Prey," a monstrous pedophile masquerading as a religious leader.
The film is based on the bestselling book subtitled My Seven-Year Investigation into Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints. Sticking with it, long after the police have given up, private detective and author Sam Brower lands Jeffs's mug shot on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.
The evidence against Jeffs is damning: from former child-wives, siblings and other disaffected members of the polygamous sect. The killer piece of evidence is Jeffs's own secret journal. Jeffs claims his imprisonment by the forces of evil is just as he prophesied.
Jeffs's brother Lyle, his successor, now on the run, is Bower's next target.
