Review of Proof (1991) by Arseniy V — 18 Aug 2008
Same old, same old. Great actors, great setting, wonderful potential for character exploration and oh so much of it suffocated by the philosophy of having to constantly "keep the audience guessing".
"Can't give this away here, can't give that away there or else they'll know, they'll know what's coming!" What a terrible trend this story/plot driven filmmaking is. Genuine creativity, an honest exploration of the situation at hand are infinitely better antidotes to predictability than desperate and tired attempts to cover one's creative tracks.
Why so few filmmakers get that, will, in many ways, always remain a mystery to me.
