Review of Proof (1991) by Ivan V — 02 Apr 2009
An intriguing film this. I caught it quite by accident on late-night TV, and that's how I like discovering movies best. Somehow it makes advanced mathematics a compelling central theme in a mainstream film.
OK, it's not *only* about maths (and we never hear or see any of the details anyway). Gwyneth Paltrow does really well portraying the daughter of a famous mathematician recently dead, herself not bad with the numbers.
She has a brisk, practical sister who is bent on "looking after her" seemingly regardless of her own views - but could she have inherited the mental problems that plagued their father? A breakthrough maths proof is discovered amongst her father's papers, and she claims it as her own - is she on the level, or was it really her father's swansong, his last and greatest piece of work? What really happened while she was nursing her father through his final years, to the detriment of her own studies? Worth a look.
