Review of Prometheus (2012) by Daniel V — 13 Feb 2014
Sidequel, quasi-prequel, "shares strands of DNA with Alien", these were the things thrown around as we approached the June 8th release date of Promethues. But let's go back 12 years earlier, shall we? Ridley Scott and James Cameron were working on an idea for an Alien prequel.
Let me say that another way, the two men most responsible for making the classics Alien and Aliens, separately, we're now teaming up for an new Alien movie. Oh my, what could have been. Unfortunately FOX, in all it's wisdom, fast tracked those cheap Alien Vs Predator movies, diluting the franchise and chased away Cameron.
8 years later Ridley Scott revisits the idea but changes it enough so that it is set in the Alien universe but is it's own animal altogether. The overall theme of the movie is based on John Milton's Paradise Lost and humanity's need to know where we come from.
It is hypothesized here that these engineers, the huge being glimpsed at briefly in the 1979 original, created man and then planned to destroy us. By the end of the movie, questions are left unanswered and when I first saw this, it made the movie feel incomplete.
Seeing it again, it still feels incomplete but the fact that I now know Scott is just setting the stage for a bigger story, I feel more satisfied and I enjoyed the movie much more. By the end you will also understand why this movie 100% belongs to the Alien Film Franchise.
