Review of Prometheus (2012) by Thomas D — 18 May 2017
The first time I watched Prometheus, I hadn't seen a single Alien film (I know), but I loved it. The visuals are breath taking, the lore is weird but hangs together, and the cesarian section scene was one of the most nail biting film experiences I'd had in recent memory. Now that I have seen Alien(s) and am fascinated by the world that's been built, Prometheus is even better.
It's one of those sci fi films that wants to explore the larger existential questions - nothing terribly special there. But when it's approached from several different perspectives (the relentless academic, synthetic human, a dying billionaire, and the Engineers themselves), you get something really fascinating. The creation of life as a "for funzies" concept is really unique, and even aside from the gorgeous look and world-class cast is what makes this film stick with me long after viewing.
