Review of Prometheus (2012) by David B — 22 Jul 2014
Rather than trying to reinvent the franchise with new tricks, "Prometheus" wants to return us to that uncertain terror that loomed over the 1979 original. You do tend to forget that it is a prequel to Aliens but when you do remember or get the in-referances it does put you off.
The amazing set pieces are better than ever and does have a great cast but I can't help but think it's a separate film from the Alien franchise. Any lack in originality is handsomely compensated by the plethora of 3D visual treats courtesy of a crackerjack technical crew that creates an eerie interplanetary moonscape that's as epic as it is requisitely foreboding.
Of course, Prometheus, as both a response to Alien and its own attempts at philosophical and spiritual investigations, ended up filling in holes that simply were not mandatory to have filled. It's still entertaining most of the time but with a few scenes that dumb down the action and the script, though good, does get a little cheesy and tedious, although visually stunning and the premise memorizing it leaves you unsatisfied.
Still worth a look but I think it's overrated. It's a film I'd waste time watching until something better comes on.
