Review of Prometheus (2012) by Michael Z — 01 Jan 2014
The film's achievement is in breathtakingly cinematizing the works of H.R. Giger. The screenplay though, however multi-faceted, does little to develop ideas of existence and creation, nor does it always succeed in creating genuine characters and dialogue, overstating too often and leaving too little to the imagination. The script also suffers abrupt shifts of focus, jumping uncomfortably from atmospheric Kubrickian space spelunking to claustrophobic sci-horror, though both styles are deftly executed. Marc Streitenfeld's score is centered around a lovely, but excessively melodic motif that misrepresents the tone and mood of the film from the first frame. Finally though, the film is more-than-able to capture the intrigue of the audience, and holds onto it, albeit with a spasmodically loosening grip.
*2.5/4*.
