Review of Prom Night (2008) by Sean E — 16 Jul 2009
I must admit I was quite surprised at this, not as bad as I imagined. The American prom (passing into college and adulthood etc) schmaltz was the most annoying thing, but beyond that it was quite competantly made and not gimmicky.
I'd be wrong to say this is scary because it most definitely isn't, the killer is creepy and its somewhat admirable that there is no silly contrivance with the killer either. He's not some unstoppable killing machine, he doesn't kill in an increasingly gruesome fashion, he's just a bit insane and kills people (though the problem with that is that it creates a bit of a dull film).
A good point is that the killer is known, which lends some Halloween inspired idea but without the mask and invulnerablility. The acting wasn't tacky it was alright, it at least has Idris Elba to lighten things up, other than that I couldn't care for the characters.
The end is predictable and sort of drifts off into laziness. So a pleasant surprise it wasn't downright awful, but apart from that it wasn't particularly overwhelming either.
