Review of Project X (2012) by Ethan U — 22 Nov 2012
There's elements of it I love, particularly the ending which redefines extreme, but my major problems lie with a line in the trailer: "a celebration of bad behavior." That just kinda' pisses me off. I'm not going to pull the whole blame the media card and say kids will try to reenact this (even though they have) my issue is much simpler: WHY should we celebrate bad behavior? Yes we watch movies and TV shows featuring despicable characters doing despicable things, and there is enjoyment in that, but the enjoyment is from the motives, the means, and seeing a world we're unfamiliar with. Here it's simple: teenagers wanna' be cool and get laid. That's a really weak motive to have your film ride on.
I liked how epic the the fallout to their actions was, but it's forgotten pretty quickly. It's basically "yeah we caused mass hysteria, yeah we're facing jail time, yeah we're going to be in debt for the rest of our lives and probably have no chance at any sort of schooling or career with this on our record, but hey, one helluva' party right guys?" The film basically even says this! Yeah sure, one helluva' party, and it's okay to mention that, but it shouldn't be the note that you end things on here. It's just more of that YOLO crap that kids spout as an excuse for being dumb assholes.
I know I'm sounding a bit like an old man or something here, and at first that bothered me. Hell, just under a year ago I probably would've loved this movie. But times change. I matured. It's a little sad, but I'm damn happy now to realize it.
You know how they call Twilight tween girl porn? Well, this is irresponsible teenager porn. It'll appeal to them, but for me it can go to hell.
