Review of Project X (2012) by Dan T — 02 Jan 2013
Project X.
"Hey what's going on everybody. This is your boy Costa... And this is Project X".
Camera follows Costa into the house.
"Yo Dax, my dick is gonna get so wet tonight".
"What's getting wet tonight"?
"Oh.... Hey Mrs. Kubb....".
Project X is about three losers; one shy skinny kid named Thomas, a smack talking Costa and a shy chunky kid named JB. These kids throw a party at Tom's house for his birthday while his parents go away for the weekend. Dax is behind the camera video taping everything.
"I'm really worried about leaving Thomas alone for the weekend." Says Mom.
"Why? He's turning 17." Responds Dad.
"That's what I'm worried about.".
"Don't worry about it. Lets be honest here. It's Thomas we are talking about. He isn't really Mr. Popularity.".
"What's that supposed to mean.".
"Thomas has a few friends. That's it. He's a loser.".
Well dad... You won't be saying that later!
The kids arrive at school and Costa starts sending out mass text messages, putting up signs and talking to everyone about the upcoming party.
"20 people" says Thomas.
"20? Are you shitting me?" Replies Costa.
"Ok 50 people absolute max".
"Dude don't worry about it.".
"I just want it to be big enough to be cool.".
After school the group visits a friend of Costa's named T-Rick to get some weed. They wait in the house as Dax records from the outside. Costa sees this cute little gnome and sneaks it out to Dax.
"He will be our mascot tonight!".
As the boys leave they get chased by T-Rick and manage to escape with a partly broken window.
"Give me back my fucking gnome!".
The last hour is all about the party .
Costa hired two security guards, Everett and Tyler, who look like they are in middle school yet totally bad ass.
No one shows up until around 10pm for this 8pm party. People start dancing, drinking and having a good time.
The bass is on overdrive. You start experiencing a taste of the movies amazing soundtrack. Ranging from some fun techno beats to classic rock.
The back yard starts filling up and girls start taking their tops off and swimming.
Next door neighbor Rob comes over and talks to Thomas and a few others outside of their house.
"Hey man, your buddy Costa came over early and said you guys where having a party but this is to much.".
After a few cracks back and forth, Rob threatens to call the cops. Everett tasers him on his neck and Rob smack the kid in the face.
"Now I'm definitely calling the cops!".
"Oh you are eh? You just punched a 12 year old in the face." Says Costa.
"He fucking tasered me! He got it on tape!".
"No. All I got was you hitting that kid in the face." Said Dax.
"Fuck you!" As Rob walks away and gets booed by the party goers.
The party is back on. People now are throughout the house and backyard, breaking and spilling stuff. Out in the backyard, one of the guys smacks the gnome with a baseball bat. Out comes hundreds of ecstasy tablets in which hundreds of people take.
Later, things start really getting out of hand as there are hundreds of people forming in the streets starting to break things in neighbors yards. Thomas realizes he can't do much to stop it. This is the last act of the film and by far the best. The cops start arriving and the extremely high and drunken party goers throw bottles at their cars, start swearing at them and even start fights with them. One guy drives Thomas' dad's car into the pool. Half the windows and light fixtures in the house are broken. Some people are having sex outside while others are involved in fights.
All of a sudden T-Rick shows up out of nowhere. He's sporting a Kevlar suit and a flamethrower. He's setting the neighbors lawns on fire, blowing up cars and aiming his flamethrower at people in the street.
"Costa! I want me fucking gnome!".
The police eventually stop T-Rick but now the entire block is set on fire. All this glorious panic whole the movie plays Battery from Metallic. Truly awesome.
"The house is completely gone Thomas. I'm so sorry. I can't fix this. I can't fix any of this.".
The gang escapes to their schools football field and rest on the bleachers.
Thomas returns home and has a chat with his dad on how his life is now over. Just for one night of fun. He does say a few good words though.
"I didn't think you had this in you Thomas." Says his dad.
"I know, I'm sorry.".
"No. I literally didn't think you had this in you. How many people were here?".
"About 1500.".
"Wow. And how was it?".
"It was awesome.".
"Ah well. You're still fucked Thomas.".
As Thomas drives to school Monday and meets up with his friends, they start getting compliments from people at school about what a great party it was. They get a round of applause by their lockers. I guess the party was big enough to be cool.
While the movie has some hilarious moments, the movie itself isn't all that funny, but its extremely entertaining. It does exactly what it advertised. The greatest party of all time.
The movie has a fantastic and fitting soundtrack which keeps the movie going at a fast pace. Never once did I feel bored with it. The performances were great and the main characters were likable and fun. I really liked Thomas in the film because he felt real. I've known a lot of people that act just like him and Costa. It also has loads of hot babes, loads of nudity and at its core, is a fun ride.
Overall the movie does what it set out to do. Throw the greatest party ever. No more, no less. There isn't much in the way of a story or deep sophisticated characters and there is definitely some seemingly unrealistic situations and events, but none of that really bothered me. A good handful of Project X's jokes fall flat and I do wish it was funnier at times, but I still enjoyed it for what it was.
4/5.
The blu ray is fantastic.
Video: The picture quality is crystal clear and is easily one of the best looking blurays I've seen.
5/5.
Audio: If you have a nice sound system, this movie will work it to the max. The great soundtrack pumps your bass and the max in glorious DTS.
5/5.
I think if you find the bluray cheap, it's worth it. I wouldn't spend full price on it but ultimately I think it's worth owning.
