Review of Project Nim (2011) by Matthew H — 07 Apr 2011
The dual-purpose of a documentary is to tell a story and invoke an emotional responses. The bevy of tear-soaked eyes in the theater even after the credits rolled validated my opinion that Project Nim proved successful in both ventures.
It is a captivating, albeit distressing, tale of scientific and human ineptitude gone wrong, at the expense of a chimpanzees natural born life. We, much like Nim Chimpsky (the not so subtly named subject of the film) are whisked through momentary relationships that concurrently provide a foundation and make it that much harder to continue the tale.
James Marsh frames every moment, even the dramatized ones, perfectly and leaves the viewers caught between contempt for those who made this story possible and admiration for those who tried their hardest to make it a happy ending.
I, for one, still can't decide which of those I feel more.
