Review of Project Nim (2011) by Dan R — 13 May 2011
This movie changed my perception of apes completely. It's the incredibly touching story of a chimp (Nim) taken from a young age to learn sign language in the "human" world. What he learns, how he behaves, and what happens when the study is over are all explored. Its the journey of the chimp's life, but it also looks at humans and how they relate to other species. I laughed intensely at parts, and I definitely cried like a baby at others. I was really drawn into this story. Director James Marsh (Man On Wire) makes a documentary that keeps pace well, is informative, tells a story, and doesn't push an opinion one way or another regarding events in Nim's life. It's just a wonderfully organized view of a string of events in this Chimp's life that expose him to be more human than some of the humans he encounters. Really, it's a beautiful film.
This film really opened my eyes and has changed the way I see the animal world. It is one of the best films I have seen in a LONG time. ps, this movie makes Bob Ingersoll basically my hero.
