Review of Project Almanac (2015) by Katherine C — 31 Jan 2015
A gripping first half is the star of this time-travel movie, although the second half loses steam, especially during an over-long, "Ferris Bueller"-type midsection. Nevertheless, it's not boring, and I enjoyed the film overall.
Pros: Engaging and realistic characters, well-portrayed by the mostly young cast; intriguing initial storyline, some enjoyable humor, increasing excitement and suspense as time-machine experiments progress, very good special effects. I didn't mind the found-footage, video camera work, as it seemed natural for these "Linkster Generation" kids to use it.
Cons: Previously mentioned middle segment at Lollapalooza, which brought the forward momentum of the movie to a dead halt for what seemed an awfully long time; and a second half that went all Butterfly Effect and turned formerly engaging, intelligent characters into rather selfish dimwits.
Still, I love time travel stories, and overall, this one has some strengths going for it. It's coherent - which is not always the case with these stories - and, for the most part, it's an entertaining, good Date Night movie. Suitable for ages 14 and up.
