Review of Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (2009) by Matthew S — 18 Sep 2012
Professor Layton and The Eternal Diva marks the first truly great film to come out of a video game property. Blending charming characters, well scripted and voiced dialogue in both the subbed and dubbed versions, a rip-roaring sense of adventure, and just enough nods to the fanbase that will fly right over the uninitiated, The Eternal Diva is a fantastic little film that's great for the whole family.
Featuring swordfights, chases, and mind-testing puzzles, Layton and his apprentice Luke find themselves wrapped up in a dangerous game where the winner will earn eternal life. Somehow, everything is connected to an ancient myth surrounding a long-forgotten civilization.
Needless to say, it's a hoot watching our archaeologist and puzzle solver match wits and solve the enigmatic game master's puzzles along the way to the finish. The only issue is that the CG effects are overused and don't look particularly good. Highly recommended.
