Review of Prizzi's Honor (1985) by John E — 01 Feb 2009
Prizzi?s Honor was a dark, crime comedy with Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over The Cuckoo?s Nest) and Kathleen Turner (Body Heat) as two hit for hire lovers hired to go after one another. This film was extremely well done.
It seemed that the film was a little slow getting started, with very little comedy to boot. The acting was superb for the time it was released but now would seem below par by today?s standards. The writing was excellent, very authentic, true to Italians and that was well represented by the actors on screen.
The script was very well conceived and the concept is something I should expect to see sometime in the future as a remake. I hope that it will be as well constructed as this version but I would suspect that it won?t.
As good as some remakes are they struggle to find the greatness their parent film once had. The directing and cinematography coincided to help make the film a better experience for the viewer. Director John Huston (Terms Of Endearment) was able to get the best out of his actors in one of his final films, another delight the viewer will be able to enjoy.
Bottom line is this seemed much more of a crime drama than a dark comedy, though there are some laughs too, but it was still a great film and is definitely worth viewing..
