Review of Privilege (1967) by Sherry L — 24 May 2011
Very "cult-ish" but forgotten british movie starring Paul Jones (former lead singer of Manfred Mann) and Jean Shrimpton (top model before Twiggy came and stole her crown;).
To avoid confusions; this is a motion picture not a documentary. Paul Jones plays a fictional character named Steve Shorter who is the human puppet of the music companies. Steve is being used for every type of commercialization. Even apples! Steve finally begin to realize what a meaningless life he lives, once he meets the beautiful artist, Vanessa (played by Jean Shrimpton).
There has been made quite a few movies before with the same theme; pop idol-hysteria, but not really from the view of the "pop idol". So in that sense this movie is a bit special, I'd like to say.
The film makers really managed to express the damage that sudden and intense exposure can cause individuals, and whatsmore; to good music with Paul Jones!
The movie genre this movie belongs to is hard to say, since there are elements of musical, drama and experimental moviemaking (psychedelic!).
The weird thing is that I never heard the actual title song, Privilege by Paul Jones (which by the way become a hit and is a great song!).
