Review of Private Vices, Public Virtues (1976) by Paul T — 19 Apr 2009
Along with Liliana Cavani's 'Beyond Good and Evil' which dramatised a menage a trois featuring Friedrich Nietzche, Lou Andres-Salome and Paul Rees - and to a lesser degree Pasolini's 'Teorema' -, Private Vices, Public Virtues became my introduction to mainstream European cinematic erotica in the 1970s.
While my memories of PVPV are a little more faded than BG&E - which was akin to being belted over the head wiith a sexual sledge-hammer - both are films which had a definite impact on my formative years cinematically speaking, and both a films which I would dearly love to see again as an adult.
