Review of Princess of Thieves (2001) by Becky B — 13 Mar 2008
The daughter of Robin Hood, Gwyn, played by Keira Knightley, gets into mischief, and stumbles into love. Knightley seems to have been born for roles of this era, but without the flash of say, the Pirates series, this Disney produced for TV movie does not have as much kick as its big screen successors of the genre.
What Princess of Thieves delivers is a manageable portrayal of growing up, and the choices youth will face. Fairly marketed for those of the tween years. For those ahead of all of that, the viewer is given a decent cast, but perhaps a plot that is too basic to enjoy thoroughly.
The epic nature usually found in such a film is downsized due to the scale of the film, which will leave many viewers disheartened due to a lack of combat intensity. All in all, Knightley manages to keep the film interesting, in a quiet, girl power, sort of way.
