Review of Princess of Thieves (2001) by Katie A — 23 Jun 2006
I?ll give Disney credit for trying, but this isn?t that great of a movie. It?s really pretty much the same old story that has been done over and over. There is a curve thrown here in that Robin Hood plays a side roll this time and his daughter, Gwyn is the one trying to defeat Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. That?s really the only curve thrown though. The rest of the movie is a standard retelling of the old ?keep the bad guys from taking the throne? plot..
The effects and costuming are pretty good, especially for a direct to home release. The costuming particularly was good and done to period. The cast is actually has some big names in it. Malcolm McDowell plays a good Sheriff of Nottingham. Prince John is well played by Johnathan Hyde. Keira Knightly has a good turn as Gwyn. Unfortunately nothing the actors can do changes the fact that we have seen this all before. The movie soundtrack is not really part of the film. Although it was a different company the music seemed similar to the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves movie score. It wasn?t a bad viewing but since there are several better versions of the Robin Hood it not one that I would bother watching more than once..
