Review of Princess Kaiulani (2010) by Sil S — 10 Jun 2010
This movie makes you wonder into your subconscious to view when one skipped over the opportunity to choose the self-sacrificing route in lieu of the beautiful love one runs into but one in a lifetime...
The Princess Kaiulani will never be popular here because she is not the light-skinned, blond, dainty princess but, rather, the wise, dark, and mysterious princess who is rushed into adulthood at a tender, teenager age. She survives the torture of the English expectations of aristocracy, survives the death of her uncle, her parents, and the saddened aunt. She even survives the weak boyfriend who leaves her when he realizes that she is destined to be a great leader. He professes his allegiance to a point and then quickly gathers his marbles and leaves her for good.
This movie is synonomous with the more traditional great movies that leave that impression that it will make you think before you leap. It just won't appeal to the majority of traditional Americans. The ceremononial, the scenery and the costumes were awesome. Thank you for keeping the Hawaiian --- Hawaiian. It was a sad one, but one I cannot stop thinking about! A solid B.
