Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Duncan L — 22 Sep 2009
One of the rare gems in horror history comes John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, a rather low budget movie that was overlook by the sheer horrific events on apocalyptic scale of the end of the world. What makes this movie worth watching is how the movie flows well and the passion given to the cause of making this movie is what Carpenter is best at.
A simple plot where a group of research team discovers a mysterious cylinder that maybe a doorway to Hell. Once it was open, all hell brokes loose and it takes some faith in order to close that doorway before the Prince of Darkness is let loose into the real world.
It is pretty much simple as that but it is the pacing of the film that gives the suspense that is needed for the audience to follow this incredible race against time of survival with B-graded actors to fulfill the shoes. Another would make it derive the scary part of the film is the haunting music and the sheer events that takes its good time to bring shivers to our skin, wanting and hoping that this is seriously not happening and hopefully it does not. I love how Donald Pleasense portray as a priest to save the Earth is done well. And towards the end, it leaves you with some nightmarish memory that behind our world there is something evil still waiting.
Prince of Darkness is a rather hard to find movie. If you are lucky to come upon this film, this should be your first John Carpenter movie to watch.
