Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Joe A — 10 Jun 2011
A strange horror from John Carpenter that mixes an old fashioned story about evil forces attempting to loose the Devil upon the earth and modern day quantum physics. Darkness is a very creepy and moody piece that seems to borrow from the Italian cinema, at times, with sequences that evoke the spirit of Argento and Fulci.
The unusual story slant does work if you are willing to throw away the typical conventions for this type of story and go with the mix of techno babble and old fashioned fire and brimstone. If not for anything else, the film is one of Carpenter's most atmospheric since the early days of Halloween and the Fog.
Spooky and underrated.
