Review of Primer (2004) by Joey S — 22 Feb 2013
As a a fan of 'hard' science fiction I have come to love this film. It reminds me of reading novels like Greg Bear's Eon Trilogy and Hannu Rajaniemi's Quantum Thief - the first (and possibly only) film I've ever seen that feels like reading rather than watching a movie - you need to use your own imagination in order to appreciate what is going on. The plot is complex due to the amount of time travel that takes place throughout, but if you keep your eyes and ears open you should be able to follow what's going on. I haven't fully understood everything just yet, which is a perfect excuse for me to go back and watch it again. It's a puzzle that needs to be solved, and that's something you'll either love or hate - some people will feel cheated because they're being asked to study the film rather than just being entertained.
Overall, it's a great experience that I'm going to enjoy all over again as soon as I have a spare hour and a half.
