Review of Primer (2004) by Patrick C — 18 Apr 2010
If at first you don't succeed, watch again. It is no exaggeration to say that Primer is the most complicated time travel movie I have ever seen. The fact that it was realised with a tiny budget of 7,000 $ makes it no less interesting.
I had to watch it thrice to get most of the details and understand the basic plot - with lots and lots of research in between the times I watched it. But in the end it is rewarding to have these "Oooooh" moments when you notice something new and out of a sudden a scene makes more sense.
The actors - considering that most of them aren't real actors anyways - do a good job. The movie proves that you don't need a whole lot of cgi to make a sci-fi movie full of suspense.
If you don't like to research after you watched a movie, this is probably not going to be a satisfying one to watch, but if you do, this movie is just for you.
It's hard to talk about the movie and show excitement without spoiling too much of the plot. A main part of the movie experience is the confusion when you first watch it, it makes you feel just like the main actors will do at one point in the movie ...
Overall, an amazing job considering afore mentioned budget. I'd like to see more of this kind of science fiction.
