Review of Primer (2004) by Darin S — 02 Dec 2013
Primer, is by far one of the more confusing films that I have seen. I was surprised that I found myself more puzzeled than inception. The plot and story are very well thought out and you can clearly see that that was the focus of the film.
I had to sit down for an hour after watching the film and analyze it to finally understand how the time travel worked. Aside from the plot I feel that the film lost some leverage there. As much as I love this movie, it was hard to stay concentrated on a slowly paced film.
The director and star Shane Caruth clearly knew what he was doing but I don't think I liked the way he approached the project. The very dull shots that ran on for at least 30 seconds each, were sort of boring to watch.
I think if the editing and cinematography were to be worked on, this film could be one of the greatest of all time. But then again if he had made more shots it could be harder to understand and digest being that it was hard enough with the slower wide shots.
