Maybe the comedy is a bit broad and the premise is a bit thin, even if it does have a payoff. Once the film gets past the farce - when these people finally square away with the situation at hand - it becomes something bittersweet and touchingly realistic.
Streep is very funny, and Thurman is unusually subtle and sensitive.
