Review of Primal Fear (1996) by Aidan D — 29 Mar 2009
"Why gamble with money when you can gamble with people's lives? That was a joke. All right, I'll tell you. I believe in the notion that people are innocent until proven guilty. I believe in that notion because I choose to believe in the basic goodness of people. I choose to believe that not all crimes are committed by bad people. And I try to understand that some very, very good people do some very bad things.".
When an altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, a smart, arrogant, and high-powered defense attorney named Martin Vail is appointed to defend him in a case where the truth is buried several layers deep.
Richard Gere: Martin Vail.
Laura Linney: Janet Venable.
Edward Norton: Aaron.
* Primal Fear is a highly intelligent, extremely compelling, and wildly entertaining courtroom thriller with many exceptional performances from its immensely gifted cast. Richard Gere is phenomenal in his best role of his career. The beautiful Laura Linney is incredible, like always. The one performance that was truly breathtaking was Edward Norton's. Primal Fear still manages to be his best work yet. Edward Norton is absolutely spellbinding and gives a powerhouse performance that is not easily forgotten. I usually dont find courtroom dramas very appealing, but this one really caught my attention simply because its so suspenseful and compelling with many incredible performances. Gregory Hoblit is somewhat of an underrated director and this film is a perfect example of what he's capable of. Primal Fear is really the best kind of courtroom thriller. Edward Norton is an actor who can portray a wide variety of characters and he has never disappointed me, not once. I have never been so impressed by an actor, he is mesmerizing in everything he's ever been in. Primal Fear is a courtroom drama unlike any other. Its brilliantly written, beautifully acted, and superbly crafted. This is an expertly made thriller. Richard Gere is a highly impressive actor, and Laura Linney is adorable and an extraordinary actress. Primal Fear is a masterpiece, a courtroom classic. Edward Norton's performance will surely be remembered and never forgotten. Primal Fear is a wonderful film and one of my favorites. Impressive and exceptional. A sensational film that comes close to being flawless. Spectacular.*.
