Review of Primal Fear (1996) by David T — 29 Jun 2009
Well-made courtroom drama.
I may have been a bit harsh with the rating but I feel that Gere overacted. If anything, the lead should be one of the stronger links.
This is Norton's second best performance. (The first is American History X). His performance was Oscar worthy and for sure, the highlight of the movie. Unfortunately this movie came out the same year as Jerry Maguire which cost Norton the Oscar. I would bet money Norton would have won if it was not for Gooding's exceptional acting in Jerry Maguire.
The rest of the supporting cast was great and outdid Gere's mediocre performance. Laura Linney in particular did a fantastic job playing the prosecuting attorney. Her cold demeanor was perfect for the role but we also see her amiable side when she smiles.
The plot was cleverly structured and led up an unpredictable twist in the end. The whole time we were thinking, "Is Aaron Stampler guilty or not?". We did not ask ourselves if...
