Review of Primal Fear (1996) by Matthew A — 28 Aug 2012
This is the film that launched the career of Edward Norton, and deservedly so, as he burns up the screen as Aaron Stampler. Director Gregory Hoblit makes his feature, directing debut with this picture after honing his skills on television as one of the directors for the ground-breaking, police drama, NYPD Blue.
Hoblit benefits greatly from a script that's strong in its character development. Richard Gere and Laura Linney shine as the attorneys opposing each other in court. In fact, this is Gere's finest hour as an actor.
Hoblit's main challenge with this story comes with keeping the drama afloat instead of mired in the muck of its subject matter. For the most part, Hoblit and creative team succeed on all levels.
