Review of Pride & Prejudice (2005) by Marina N — 13 Jun 2012
Clearly one of my favorite love stories. I am a big fan of Jane Austen's. Her way of writing and her wit are unparalleled. The movie doesn't have to stick to the book in every aspect to become a great adaptation. Nevertheless, I am glad that Joe Wright didn't compromise too much. I don't think anyone could fit so much of the story into 2 hours. I have read that the American version included an additional final scene with Darcy and Elizabeth kissing. This happened after early screenings in the US revealed that the audience was unhapppy about the 'open' ending. I actually prefer the British/European version, where this scene is missing. This movie is so well-made that it doesn't need to explicitly prove the affection between the two by a kiss.
The chemistry/tension between Keira and Matthew is so intense that I can feel it even if I just think about the movie. The supporting cast - Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench, Brenda Blethyn, Carey Mulligan, Rosamund Pike - doesn't rank behind the lead actors. The dialogue is sharp and witty. The cinematography is superb. Also the scenery - Peak district I believe - is gorgeous and adds to the beauty of the movie. The perfect original score by Dario Marianelli is still in my ears. I am clearly in love with this movie and, as such, totally blind to its deficits.
