Was prejudiced against this to begin with, as I loved the 1995 BBC series so much, and the choice of leads for this seemed daft. But it's Joe Wright, and I loved 'Atonement' and 'Hanna' so was worth giving a go.

And it's rather good. Keira Knightley is actually spot on as Lizzie, and it's well cast all round, has a sumptuous Dario Marianelli score, and looks beautiful. The only flaw is Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy, a character that is supposed to be inscrutable, but having a leading man so wooden that he's seemingly carved from oak is perhaps a step too far.
