Review of Pride & Prejudice (2005) by Georgia S — 17 Oct 2013
How disappointing. For many P&P lovers the language of the story and the time period is one of the vessels that made Jane Austin's wit and bite so subtle and potent. This version seems to disregard the preserved beauty of that story feature in favor of more obvious, blunt tools.
It killed some scenes I was literally holding my breath to see. Knightley and MacFadyen have serious talent but they aren't buyable in these roles (in part maybe due to the script) or as having the passionate push and pull with each other that is so key to this love story.
The rest of the cast portrays their characters spot on, Blethyn, Pike Sutherland, Dench, Friend, Malone, Reilly, Hollander--great! I honestly keep trying to watch it again thinking I must have been mistaken but I can't even finish it.
