Review of Pride and Prejudice (1940) by Keiko N — 24 Sep 2007
Unrefined, inelegant and the characters' behavior is improper and inappropriate. Laurence Olivier is a much too eager Darcy and Greer Garson's Lizzy shows no complexity whatsoever. Maureen O'Sullivan is a dreadful Jane who has no genuine feelings and an airheaded smile that never goes away.
The gentle, unassuming Jane of the book is completely lost. The film is too short to do the plot justice: important pieces are condensed and interesting characters are left out. The whole film is abbreviated.
Terrible decision to push the time period later just to be able to use more elaborate costumes. The frills are obnoxiously ostentatious. The story is rushed and winds up being ridiculous.
