Review of Pride and Prejudice (1940) by J K — 27 Sep 2009
I sat down to watch this with very low expectations but it actually turned out to be a nice surprise. No, it isn't a particularly faithful or accurate adaptation and the costumes are anachronistic but it's great fun and surprisingly entertaining.
I especially loved the carriage race and archery scenes. Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier give very good performances as Elizabeth and Darcy and have excellent chemistry. Ok, this isn't the best adaptation of the novel but there's still much in it to enjoy and I think it captures the humour of the book well.
